Band instrument repair is a very specialized area requiring extensive training, knowledge and skill. Repairs should never be attempted by anyone who is not trained to perform the necessary procedures.
Moreover, all instrument repair technicians are comical to tell if instruments brought into their shops after having been subjected to “do-it-yourself” repairs by players, parents; or well-intentioned band directors.
There are repairs; which you can do-it-yourself. But you also need to know what types of repairs should always be left to the professionals. When in doubt, consult a competent repair technician; before you try any repairs yourself.
Selecting an Instruments Repair Facility
Repair professionals vary in their abilities and levels of expertise. Also, the instrument; which one can repair; and which he/she cannot. Don’t assume because a person can repair a bagpipe means that he/she is also at a position of repairing a drum.
Nonetheless, since you are putting an expensive musical instrument into the hands of a repair person; you want someone who is going to do the job correctly. However, along with charging you appropriately; and, above all, do no harm to the instruments.
Go to a repairer that has expertise in a certain line only unlike general repairer. This is because such a person will most likely be a complete specialist; thus more knowledgeable than a general repairer who is not more than a Jack-of-all-trades; and a muster-of-none.
Never assume that the terminology used in one repair facility has the same meaning as that used in another facility.
As a matter of fact, always ask what is included in a repair quote, specifically. Terms such as Re-pad, Play or Playing Condition, Recondition, Restoration, Cleaning & lubrication, etc.; all have widely varying meanings in different repair facilities. However, it’s important that you understand exactly what is covered in a quote.
